Synesthesia

1. Synesthesia
is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes.or color-graphemic synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored while in ordinal linguistic personification, numbers, days of the week and months of the year evoke personalities.
2. Grapheme-color synesthesia
Letters or numbers which appear in color.
3. Ordinal-linguistic personification
Numbers, days of the week and months of the year take on personalities.
4. Number-form synesthesia
Numbers, days of the week and months of the year are seen in precise location in space.
5. Sound-color synesthesia
Certain sound trigger the viewing of colors or simple shapes.
6. Lexical-gustatory Synesthesia
Words cause specific taste sensations in the mouth.

Nature vs. Nurture: Homosexuality

The video we saw this week in Psychology was about Homosexuality. There are infinite debates on how homosexuality can be caused, is it the environment the person lives in or are they born with it. Scientists have discovered that every time a women has a male child the next generation has a 1/3 chance of being gay. What I learned from this video is that childhood gender nonconformity which means that a child has interests and acts like the opposite sex. Research shows that kids with childhood gender nonconformity end up being gay when they grow up. Also that homosexuality can be sensed at a really early age just like Adam and Jared; when they were only eighteen month’s old Jared was asking for a fire truck and Adam for a Barbie. I find interesting that homosexuality is not completely genetics but also not completely environmental. I find interesting that homosexuality is more nature than nurture, Adam’s mother said that who is worst to tell him that there is something wrong with him his own mother or her some people from school. If she would have told him that there was something wrong at an early age it would have changed his outside not his inside. Nature vs. Nature is a very interesting.

Criminal Minds

The video we saw this week in Psychology is very multifaceted and interesting about the minds and thoughts of a murderer; it teaches the audience and makes them think about the constant argue of whether a murderer’s actions are the results of his brain, his experiences or maybe even a dramatic injury he or she had experienced earlier in their lives. Watching this video I learned about different murderers’ lives and actions that might had driven them to commit such things and even about murderers that without having a past have randomly chosen to subject those actions and live with the harsh consequences. This simple idea of where murderer’s thoughts are situated made me reach the conclusion that anyone can commit such actions, anyone can randomly decide to be a murder and that’s why scientists haven’t been able to foresee such action, maybe in a near future technology could advance to the point in which the next generation would not have to sufferer such high crime rates particularly those of assassination or murder. One of the examples that most impacted me was the one of the men that randomly departed followed by a little girl that also vanished not long after that, later on the men was found with an ice cream sitting tranquil on top of a bridge looking down were later on the body of the little girl was uncovered from. This man had no highlighted past experiences that would conduct him to commit such things instead something in his brain drove him to do it, this story makes the audience wonder what that answer could be. I think this video was different and creative and its lessons were well transmitted, which results in individual thoughts from the listeners themselves that arouse from the constant questions the video posts in the audience’s minds and ideas.

Brain Injury

Brain injuries are very excruciating and are the ones that people would most avoid. As shown in the video of Living with Traumatic Brain Injury you are very prone to the loose of skills (walking, playing, talking,) problems with the vision, a paralysis and problems to utter words. But even though those can be some of the problems, the most common ones are thinking and behavior problems. Many people change their way of being after being traumatized by a brain injury and they most commonly change the way in which they conduct themselves. I feel very proud for all of the four that have managed to overcome these accidents that they have encountered, but the one that I feel more proud of is Bryan because even though he is partially paralyzed, he has his family and loves them. This is a perfect example for other people because some people could commit suicide after passing through this injury. It would be very interesting to visit support groups to learn various unique cases of people that suffer this. Traumatic brain injuries often happen when force is applied to the skull, as in Basketball when accidents occur and a player finishes with a concussion. Finally, if you are able to prevent this avoid it because you would not like to experience this type of injury.

Mind Reading

The second video in Psychology we learned something very odd about mind reading. I knew before that doctor could observe our brains through MRI's. But I didn't know they could read our mind before, that is something I never imagined could happen. The video showed me that there is a machine that is called Functional MRI that can read your thoughts. It works by asking the person put in the MRI to think about something and the machine detects the parts of the brain working and then what they are thinking. I found out that when you think of something, several parts of the brain work to produce the thought. Another thing they can scan is your intentions.  They use it on criminals when it is necessary, for example they can scan a pedophile and show him a picture of a baby and see what does he feel, think and want to do with the baby in the picture; if the picture of the baby intrigued the pedophile it would demonstrate that he is not totally cured. It can also show a scene to someone and see if they are familiar with the situation in it. But then it told us that they did some tests wanting to prove what was the best way to sell the product to a person and they turned out to be not very effective because they sometimes don’t prove your behavior.

Teenage Brain

During adolescence and teenage years it is common that teenagers fight and argue with their parents. Aside from being common, it is normal also. This is because the brain is passing through several and important changes. For example, the Prefrontal cortex, which is in the frontal lobe, is the part of your brain responsible for planning behavior, solving problems, and controlling emotions. Teenagers do not have this part of the brain fully developed so they behave bad, and always want to do things their way instead of following parents instructions and hearing their advices. Most of the teenagers think that their parents hate them because they punish them, but they do that because they love them.
One great quote that I could relate to this topic is, "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years," from Mark Twain. Obviously his father did not learn so much in seven years, it's only that when he was fourteen he was immature and thought that he was ignorant. However when he grew up he found out that he was the one who was wrong.
On the other hand, I learned that teenagers need to sleep around 8 to 9 hours daily. Sleeping that time will help you develop correctly, it will help you in school also because you will go with more energy to work. Getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep will improve your memory. I liked looking at this video because I learned great things.ng
